About Great Lakes Dental Associates - Dentist in Spirit Lake
Great Lakes Dental Associates is locally owned by Dr. Shaun O’Neill and Dr. John Clay. It is comprised of three dental practices which have merged into one location. The expansion of the practices offers added convenience for our patients when scheduling appointments and the capabilities to provide comprehensive services through state-of-the-art technology. All original practices have deep-seated roots in Spirit Lake and Laurens.
Dr. Linda Bieri and her father, Dr. Miles Olson, practiced dentistry together in Laurens, IA, upon her graduation in 1978 from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Steven Christensen joined them in 1986, and the three practiced together for eight years. Drs. Bieri and Christensen continued practicing in Laurens and opened a satellite practice in 2005 in Spirit Lake, IA. Both locations have thrived due to the compassionate care provided to patients and the doctor’s and team members’ skills.
Dr. Janet Boyes graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2014. She acquired Great Lakes Dental Center in 2015 and has grown the practice through excellent patient care and compassion. Her passion for dentistry has developed a deep level of trust and loyalty from her patients. She and her team members embrace the same goal for the highest standards of care for their patients.
Spirit Lake Dental was established by Dr. Owen Nielsen. His son, Dr. Eric Nielsen, joined him upon graduation from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Upon his father’s retirement, he became the sole practitioner. The practice grew to serve many loyal patients, consisting of both local and summer residents. He and his team provided exceptional care to all patients, catering to their needs with empathy and respect. Dr. Nielsen retired in 2018, shortly after his practice was acquired by Applewhite Dental partners. In June 2021, Great Lakes Dental Associates purchased the practice, bringing in all original team members.

Had a loose filling. Was quite apprehensive about having a crown put on based on a horrible experience from many years ago. Told Dr Hindman about my ability to process novocain like candy… He gladly changed to accommodate me. I also was pleased to hear they make the crowns on-site, no temporary crowns and come back to see them for permanent. My overall experience was great. Staff were friendly and helpful. Dr. Hindman was communicative, experienced, and efficient. Crown fit nicely first time.

I have had a lifelong fear of dentists but Dr. Bieri is the BEST! She is so knowledgeable and good at what she does. She gave me a filling without needles and it didn’t hurt at all. It’s also so much smoother than other dentists have done my fillings in the past.

Our 6 year old grandson from Texas was staying with us and had a fall in which ER suggested he be seen by a dentist as soon as possible. Our dentist was unable to get him in so called Great Lakes Dental Associates. They were able to get him in that afternoon. I was so impressed immediately walking through the door. The receptionists greeted us with kindness. Liz the hygenist technician was so calming and friendly to our grandson and to us. Dr Cole Johnston was also fantastic providing comfort to us and our grandson. Time was allowed to confer with parents in Texas and their dentist. We never felt rushed. Liz and Dr Cole made a traumatic day much better. I would highly recommend them. Our grandson went home minus two teeth but seemingly unaffected.
